What does the visit consist of?

This visit consists of a guided tour of two hours through several Cármenes near the Alhambra. The itinerary is designed to discover a little-known history of Granada. The prison of the Alhambra’s captives during the Moorish Granada.

What do we propose on this visit?

We propose you to visit what is perhaps the largest medieval Arab prison in Europe. Including some underground sections.

In front of the Alhambra fortress, there was an area designated to the prison that coexisted in parallel with the Nasrid palaces, called Ahabul Haql, which housed thousands of captives, prisoners in silos that extended from Torres Bermejas to the current Carmen de los Mártires. We will travel through part of the underground of Granada and we will walk through one of the most exotic, stunning and singular gardens of the city.

You will learn about daily life in captivity. The context of a whole era and the border conflicts. We will walk through passages, gardens and places that once formed part of the medieval dungeons of Granada.

What will you visit?

We will enter the gardens of the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation (better known as the Carmen Blanco), next to the Torres Bermejas and the exterior of the Carmen de los Catalanes. Afterwards, we will walk and you will learn about the history of another of the most special gardens in Granada, located in the Carmen de los Mártires.

NOTE: This visit includes the entrance ticket to the Rodriguez-Acosta Foundation. During our visit you will view the underground galleries, but if you want to visit other rooms, we recommend the guided tour offered by the Foundation itself because it gardens are of high symbolic value. Also the studio of the painter José María Rodríguez-Acosta and the Institución Gómez-Moreno Museum.
